What is Internet ?

Internet

The Internet is a system where several computers are connected to each other to form Network in which one computer can transmit data to another connected computer.

Internet is used within an organization in a city or between two organizations in a city.

LAN(LOCAL AREA NETWORK) is a network within an organization and

MAN(METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK)  is a network within a city.

The Internet is a network of networks that uses TCP/IP to transmit the data.

The Internet is used between countries and ispresent worldwide.

Intranet

An Intranet is a privet network inside a company or an organization that uses the same

Kind of software as used by the Internet, but Internet is meant for private use. A company

Uses the Internet to manage projects, provide employee information within the different

Branches of a company.

World Wide Web

World Wide Web (WWW or Web) is a collection of the Internet servers that use Hyper

Text Transfer protocol (HTTP) to transfer documents, called web pages. Web pages are

Formatted using a language, called Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). A web page

Can contain text as well as multimedia items such as graphics, sound, animations and

Videos. A collection of web pages are called a site.

Protocol

A protocol is a set of rules that control how the data is transmitted between two or more

Devices. Devices are called the communicating parties and a protocol is agreed upon

By the parties in order to communicate. The protocol determines the way the transmission

Errors are checked, the way the transmitted files are compressed, the way the sender indicates the end transmission of a message and the way the receiver indicates that it has received a message. The protocol ensures the transmission to be faster and reliable.

HTTP

Hypertext file is a document containing text, which contains links to other documents or content in the Same document. HTTP is a protocol for transferring

hypertext files across the Internet. HTTP is used Between a server and a Web browser to request a document and transfer its content.) Web browser is a software application that provides you a graphical environment to view and navigate Web pages  after

connecting to the Internet..

TCP/IP

TCP/IP is a set of rules that direct a computer how to exchange information across the Internet. This is the Communication protocol that connects your computer

to the Internet. All other Internet protocols such as HTTP is based upon TCP/IP...

URL

Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the global address

of Web pages on the Web. A Web page has the same

URL Worldwide. A URL consists of two parts, the first

indicates the name of the protocol and the second part indicates the

Internet protocol (IP) address of the computer where the

Web page is located.) For example,

http:/www.indianrailways.gov.in is a URL in which the protocol used is HTTP and www.indianrailways.gov.in indicates an

IP address on the Web. You need to specify the URL in the address bar of your Web browser browse the site.

E-mail

E-mail massaging is one of the most important

services provided by the Internet. E-mail message

that is a sent through electronic network to a

specific group or an individual.

You can send text messages and attach files that

Include graphics, sound and video to an individual

at a remote location.

Types of Networks

The computer networks are categorized on the basis

of area in which the network exists. There are basically

three major

Types of networks, which are:

LAN

MAN

WAN

LAN

Local Area Network (LAN) is spanned in a small area

such as a building or group of buildings. Each node

in the LAN has Its own Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Nodes in the Network can access data from other

devices on the LAN. The Transmission methods used

by the LANs are broadcast, multicast and user-to-user

transmission.The transmission method

Used by the most of the LANs is broadcast

. In broadcast

transmission, the message or data transmitted by one

node is Received by each node of the network. LANs

are suitable for the applications that depend on timely

results. The common Speeds of transmission on the

LAN are 10 mega bits Per Second (Mbps) or 16 Mbps.

LANs have very low error rates and Propagation delay.

The time required to reach the data from source

computer to destination computer in the network is

Known as propagation delay.

MAN

Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) are covered in a

larger area as compared to LANs .These data networks

are designed For a city or town. MANs are usually

characterized with very high-speed connections that use

fiber optical cables. MANs Use these high-speed

Technologies to connect LANs.

WAN

Wide Area Networks cover large area and consist of two

or more LANs. The speed of the transmission on the

WAN is in Gigabits range. The computers connected to

a WAN are connected through public networks such as

telephone network. The Largest existing WAN is the

Internet.
